The USLS College of Medicine seeks to provide quality medical education which promotes academic excellence, ethical practice, the spirit of inquiry and research, and Christian values anchored on the Lasallian charism of faith, zeal, and service.Objectives:
Animated by the spirit of St. John Baptist de la Salle, the College of Medicine aims to produce competent, compassionate and ethical physicians who are motivated by their Christian faith and are committed to serve the health needs of the province and the country, especially the poor.
Specifically, the College of Medicine aims to:
- provide courses in basic and clinical sciences that will equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes in the practice of medicine;
- nurture the spirit of inquiry and research to address the health needs of the province;
- inculcate the highest ethical standards of medical practice among students, and
- provide students with activities that will encourage a holistic formation of their personhood
- the main campus at La Salle Avenue where the Main Lecture Halls and the University Library are located; and
- the Satellite Health Sciences Campus adjacent to its main affiliate hospital, the Corazon L. Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital where the Laboratories are located.
The USLS College of Medicine is affiliated with two government hospitals and a private hospital.
The main affiliate hospital is the Corazon L. Montelibano Regional Hospital which is also known as the Western Visayas Regional Hospital. CLMMRH is a 400 bed government tertiary medical center with a complete complement of medical as well as surgical specialties and an abundance of various clinical experiences available for student learning.
Aside from CLMMRH, the USLS College of Medicine is also affiliated with the Jose Locsin Provincial Hospital formerly called the Silay City General Hospital. This is another government hospital located seven kilometers from Bacolod City, with most of the patients coming from the northern part of Negros. With its variety of cases, the hospital will be another source of clinical enrichment.
Our Lady of Mercy Specialty Hospital is a private hospital in Bacolod City which will provide the initial exposure of Freshmen and Sophomores. Located two kilometers from the USLS main campus, the hospital is an affiliate of Cedars Hospital in Dallas, Texas. It houses the Tony Chan Eye Center which has the most modern eye instrumentation and equipment, and the Bacolod Stone Center, which has the only lithotrypter in Bacolod City.
The Province of Negros Occidental will recommend scholarship applicants who must be residents of the Province and should pass the screening procedures of the University. Upon licensing and prior to residency, grantees will be required to serve any government hospital or clinic in Negros Occidental for 100 volunteer - hours per scholarship year.
Two full scholarship grants will be given by 2002 -2003 and two grants shall be added for each succeeding year until the total reaches eight (8).
Privately Funded Scholarship Grants
Two full scholarship grants will be available for SY 2002 - 2003. Applicants must be residents of the Province and should pass the screening procedures. The scholarships will be given to highly qualified, motivated, but financially challenged students. The grant covers tuition and other school fees, books, uniform, allowance, and board and lodging fees for out-of-town residents. Upon licensing, and prior to residency, scholars will be required to serve in a barrio in Negros Occidental for at least one year.
A committee will evaluate scholarship applications. To retain the grant, the student should have a minimum semesteral Grade Point Average (GPA) of 85, with no grade lower than 80 and should exhibit exemplary behavior.
