Institute For Negros Development

The Institute for Negros Development (IND) was established as a result of the Negros Congress in 2004. It serves as a university-wide center for promoting the theory and practice of sustainable development through multi-stakeholder engagement in issues and concerns affecting the development of Negros.

Vision

The Institute for Negros Development envisions a society that is just, equitable, humane and sustainable. It is committed to contribute to the global fight against poverty and inequality by advancing human well-being, progress and social justice starting in the island of Negros.

Mission

  • To facilitate participatory and collaborative multi-stakeholder engagement that will result in the design and implementation of policy-oriented and people-centered development programs and services beneficial to the people of Negros.
  • To contribute to the creation of innovative, viable and sustainable solutions to problems of poverty, hunger and inequality in the island of Negros.

Strategic Objectives

  1. Bridging, Partnership and Networking
    • To develop and build strong and effective partnerships with diverse stakeholder groups to bridge human and resource gaps and develop the linkages necessary to address a sustainable development agenda for Negros.
    • To provide a space and structure for collaboration and negotiation, mediation and resolution of conflicts among various sectors of society.
      • Hosting of membership-based network

  2. Capacity-Building and Education
    • To help build and increase the capacity of civil society organizations, grassroots movements, sectoral organizations, business organizations and local governments to meet critical challenges to sustainable development.
    • To help create and institutionalize sustainable development policies and programs and to help improve its delivery.
    • To help educate and train the next generation of leaders in sustainable development science and practice.

  3. Research, Advocacy and Publication
    • To conduct policy-oriented research, publications and fora on a wide range of development topics that analyze relevant issues which also serve as launching pad for discussion and formulation of viable development initiatives.
    • To build a collection of database on a range of development topics so that specific information can be retrieved as needed by the different sectors such as policy makers, development agents, industry users, the Church, the academe, etc.
    • To advocate for issues that promote and address rights-based approaches to development, food security, gender equality, good governance and policy reform, justice, peace and integrity of creation.

  4. Internal Networking
    • To provide a space and structure for an institutional and inter-disciplinary network among the different research and extension units and programs of the university to share resources, expertise and experience and to jointly analyze and address the development challenges of Negros thereby strengthening the university’s overall development agenda and efforts.
    • To help increase the capacity of development and extension services of the university

        • Balayan (Community Extension and Volunteer Formation Office)

        • Institute for Environmental Governance
        • Business Resource Center
        • National Service Training Program
        • Community Services Center of the Integrated School

    • Piloting
      • To pilot a youth and entrepreneurship project that will address the needs of the out-of-school youth of Bacolod City/Negros Occidental.
        • Project YES (Youth, Entrepreneurship and Service) – with a $20,000 funding support from the Rotary Foundation, the Rotary International, the Rotary Districts 7910 (Massachusetts, US) and 3850 (Philippines) and Rotary Clubs of Wellesley (MA) and Bacolod South.
      • To collaborate with PinoyME Foundation (PMEF) in the livelihood support for Negros sugar farm workers through vermicasting. This is a high impact project that addresses both poverty reduction and environmental protection which is well within the vision and mission of your organization.
