The USLS Negrense Studies and Development Center, in collaboration with the English Department and the National Commission for Culture and Arts, held the 2nd KRITIKA last April 29-30, 2009 at Balay Kalinungan. The regional seminar-workshop on the study and teaching of regional literature was attended by 88 Philippine literature teachers and students from various schools in region 6. It was a rare opportunity for the participants to listen to 7 of the country’s highly respected and multi-awarded writers; Dr. Juliet Mallari, Dr. Victor Sugbo, Dr. Marj Evasco, Dr. Pricilla Macansantos, Mr. Carlos Arejola, Dr. Steven Fernandez, and Dr. Servando “Ben” Halili. Joining this distinguished group of speakers is one of USLS outstanding faculty, Ms. Fatima Elli of the Filipino Department. The seminar-workshop introduced the participants to various regional literature such as Kapampangan, Subanun, Bicolano, Hiligaynon, Cordilleras, and Waray. Different teaching strategies to address the problem of lack of students’ interest in regional literature were also among the topics covered in the workshop.
