MassComm paper bags awards in COPRE’09

            USLS Mass Communication Department’s official publication The LEAD won three out of four major awards bagging Best Departmental Publication, Best Newsletter and Best Newspaper in the 36th College Press Awards 2009 of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region VI in Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iloilo City last Nov. 26.

            Over 250 college editors from almost 50 publications of the different colleges and universities in Western Visayas vied for various awards for their respective publications and also individual awards for on-the-spot writing contests.

            The LEAD, under the supervision of Journalism Professor Allen Del Carmen received the awards 1st place Best Sports Page and Best News Page, 2nd place Best Editorial Page and Best Newspaper Layout and 3rd place Best Feature Page.

            On the individual writing contests, first placers were Ms. COPRE First runner- up Lianne Fernandez in Feature Writing – English and Mark Christopher Dueñas in Copy Editing and Headline Writing – English.

            Landing on second place were Jemaimah Taladico in News Writing – English, Kathreen Joyce Tubid in Copy Editing and Headline Writing - Filipino and John Alexander Cuyoca in Sports Writing - Filipino.

            The writers who landed as third placers were Joana Marie Gareza in Feature Writing – English and in Copy Editing and Headline Writing – Filipino, Kathreen Joyce Tubid  in Copy Editing and Headline Writing- English, and Jezeel Mananap in Editorial Cartooning.

            Mr. COPRE Peter Samson placed fourth in Copy Editing and Headline Writing – English while John Alexander Cuyoca also bagged fourth place in News Writing – English.

            Among the others who joined the COPRE were Charese Margaret Chua, Erneil John Garfin and Bashtian Adriatico who were Mass Communication students and Allen Gabriel Iñigo who was the guest sports columnist.

            This year’s COPRE theme adapts the concern on climate change wherein student journalists aired out their views and stand on the timely issue and it assesses the application of journalistic principles and skills learned by the participants from the series of basic journalism seminar- workshops facilitated by PIA.
