Dyadic Coping, Perceived Stress, and Marital Adjustment Among Female Cancer Patients and Spouses

ABSTRACT
Female patients with cancer bear significant burdens, which affect their coping mechanisms and marital dynamics. This study examined how stress perception, marital adjustment, and dyadic coping relate to female cancer patients and their partners. Using a quantitative descriptive correlation design, data were gathered through surveys and interviews from 259 pairings. The findings show that married intimacy, dyadic coping, and stress perception are all at moderate levels. In coping and stress levels, there were notable distinctions between patients and spouses. For both groups, there was a substantial correlation between dyadic coping and perceptions of stress and marital adjustment. Focus group interviews uncovered difficulties, including growing intimacy, insufficient assistance, and communication problems. The results highlight the significance of creating and implementing couples-based therapies and the complexity of the psychosocial difficulties that couples encounter. Couples-based interventions aim to provide more thorough and successful support to couples dealing with this challenge, enhance coping mechanisms for both parties, equip patients and their spouses with anxiety management tools, and fortify the marriage through activities that foster empathy, communication, and emotional support. The results led to the creation of "Harmonizing Journey: Enhancing Dyadic Coping, Reducing Stress, and Strengthening Marital Bonds for Female Cancer Patients and Spouses," a more all-encompassing approach to patient and spouse care.

In the realm of psychosocial health, Liu and Espinosa examine dyadic coping, perceived stress, and marital adjustment among female cancer patients and their spouses. Their findings shed light on the interplay between personal health and relational dynamics, offering valuable perspectives for psychosocial interventions. Equally compelling is the work of Song and Trajera, which captures the lived experiences of patients undergoing organ transplantation, providing a profound understanding of their challenges and the support they require. Other studies in this issue focus on empowering patients through self-management and improved care pathways. Luo and Trajera document the experiences of elderly patients with colorectal cancer, emphasizing the significance of autonomy in enhancing quality of life. Meng and Trajera, on the other hand, explore the care needs of glioma patients during hospitalization, offering insights into improving symptom management and survivorship care. Lastly, Liu and Cadena investigate discharge readiness and the quality of discharge teaching among diabetic patients, highlighting the level of correlation in terms of discharge readiness and influencing factors for discharge management plan. This collection of studies reflects the diverse and evolving landscape of nursing education and healthcare research.
