ABSTRACT

This study examined student-athletes' experiences at a university, focusing on their challenges and coping strategies. Using a phenomenological design, this study investigated how student-athletes managed their academic and athletic responsibilities and the factors influencing their well-being and resilience. Utilizing Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as the analytical framework, the study captured their unique perspectives by emphasizing their subjective experiences and how they interpret their lived realities as students and as athletes at the same time. Ten student-athletes, enrolled in the university and holders of varsity scholarships, were purposefully selected as participants in the study. Using a semi-structured, in-depth interview approach, the analysis identified eight key themes: managing dual roles, balancing academic and athletic responsibilities, financial challenges, adequacy of facilities, access to support services, motivation sources, self-care strategies, and opportunities for personal growth. Results emphasized the significant pressures student-athletes face, such as time management and the need for more institutional support. This study concluded by emphasizing the importance of providing comprehensive institutional support that addresses the academic, athletic, and mental health needs of student-athletes, proposing a wellness program to enhance their overall success and resilience not just in the field but also in the classroom.
