From Adversity to Advocacy: The Empowering Legacy of Dr. Virgilio R. Aguilar
This #PassionWednesday, we shine a light on the inspiring journey of Dr. Virgilio R. Aguilar, a committed professor in the Political Science Department at the University. With 37 years of teaching experience, his journey is a true testament to grit, determination, and unwavering qualities that have shaped him into the remarkable educator that he is today.
Born as the youngest of 14 siblings, Sir Tisoy faced significant challenges early on in life. Growing up in a household with limited financial resources, the ladder of success for him was never easy. Adding to these struggles, he had to navigate life with a physical disability. Yet, these obstacles did not deter him nstead, they intensified his resolve to succeed.
The turning point in his life came when the late Br. Anthony “Tony” Sullivan FSC extended a helping hand by offering him a scholarship to enroll in the University. That opportunity not only opened doors for his education but also shaped the core of who he is today. “Shaped, founded, nurtured, and blessed by La Salle,” Sir Tisoy often says when reflecting on his journey.
As a Lasallian educator, his classroom extends beyond the halls of the university, as he dedicates himself to several philanthropic causes, notably child rights advocacy and his "Share-a-Meal" initiative, known as Virgilio's Kitchen. Through this program, he ensures that those in need have access to basic necessities, showing that even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact—embodying the Lasallian core values of spirit of faith, zeal for service, and communion in mission.
Sir Tisoy’s commitment to helping others doesn’t end there. He has taken a special interest in aiding indigenous students in gaining access to a Lasallian education. By assisting them in securing scholarships, he gives them the same opportunity that was once given to him. For Sir Tisoy, his greatest joy comes from seeing his former students succeed in their respective fields, knowing that he played a part in their journey.
His life’s work is a reflection of his belief that "the best of us comes out in the face of adversities." Despite the hardships he faced; financial difficulties, physical limitations, and the responsibilities that came with being the youngest of a large family, he pushed forward with steadfast resilience.
Dr. Virgilio Aguilar serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration to all. His life story is not merely one of personal success but one of service, compassion, and relentless pursuit of bettering the lives of others. Indeed, La Salle has shaped all that he is, and in return, he continues to shape the future of countless individuals who are fortunate enough to cross his path.
