USLS Hosts McLuhan Forum Featuring Rappler’s Jodesz Gavilan

The University’s College of Arts and Sciences, in partnership with the Embassy of Canada, hosted the McLuhan Forum Series on Responsible Media on November 22 at the Mutien Marie Auditorium A showing the importance of media literacy and truth-telling in responsible journalism.

Themed “Data and Journalism: Utilizing Open Source and Online Research for Human Rights and Investigative Journalism,” the forum featured Jodesz Gavilan, an investigative journalist and lead editorial researcher for Rappler.

Gavilan, also a Marshall McLuhan fellow, captivated the audience with insights into the evolving media landscape while also sharing her experiences in investigative reporting. She emphasized the role of journalism in the current media climate and encouraged prioritizing accuracy and integrity.

The program welcomed reactions from Jeony Bigay, Kabisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) - Negros Occidental Chapter, Erwin Ambo Delilan, President of the Negros Press Club, and Elias Patriarca Jr., the University's Political Science Program Chairperson.

It attracted students and educators from across Bacolod City, providing an opportunity to discuss the importance of open-source tools and online research in promoting ethical journalism.
