USLS features ‘Rama, Hari’ rock opera ballet by 5 national artists

In a creative fusion of powerful choreography and poetic storytelling, the highly-acclaimed musical ballet “Rama, Hari” was brought to life by the Alice Reyes Dance Philippines at the St. La Salle Coliseum on October 11 and 12, showcasing a striking display of Philippine creativity and cultural heritage.

Five national artists collaborated to shape this rock opera masterpiece—Alice Reyes for the direction and choreography, Ryan Cayabyab for the music, Bienvenido Lumbera for the libretto, Salvador Bernal for the production and design, and Rolando Tinio for the English supertitles.

“This performance is not just a celebration of artistry and cultural heritage, but a testament to the enduring power of storytelling,” University President Br. Joaquin Severino Martinez, FSC, DMin shared in his opening remarks, encouraging viewers to be captivated by the cultural legacy and storytelling of the show.

Furthermore, Br. Joaquin expressed his gratitude and acknowledged the presence of the main sponsor of the event, TESDA Director General—Cong. Jose Francisco “Kiko” Benitez—who helped bring the performance to Bacolod City.

“There is no reason why Bacolod does not deserve to experience this type of performance,” Benitez expressed, assuring the audience that they will witness a performance worthy of the name of Alice Reyes, along with the other four national artists.

Local dancers from Garcia-Sanchez School of Dance, and Kagayon Dance Troupe, and the University's own Jean Baptiste Dance Company also graced the stage along with the casts, showcasing the vibrant talent of Bacolodnons.

The show is part of the series of fundraising initiatives by the Office of the Brother President, wherein the proceeds will aid in funding essential projects for both USLS and St. Joseph School - La Salle, including the renovation of the Gallaga Theatre and the development of USLS Biodiversity Center.

“Rama, Hari”, first introduced in 1979, is a bold fusion of ballet and opera performance based on the epic poem “Ramayana” which features the adventures of Prince Rama in rescuing his wife, Sita.
