#PassionWednesday: Getting in Character with Hera Lynx

Making her favorite characters come to life with every stitch and pose, Jaimie Borromeo takes center stage this Passion Wednesday.

Jaimie Elizabeth Borromeo, known for her stage name Hera Lynx, is a local cosplayer from the municipality of La Castellana. A performer at heart, Jam’s passion for the stage began with character impersonations and pageants. With her natural love for crafting, she merges these into her cosplays, giving her the freedom to step into the shoes of the characters she has long admired.

Jam’s introduction to cosplay came through Tito Choco, the owner of Yuya, a local anime store. Her curiosity led her to attend a convention where she participated in drawing and cosplay competitions. Her first character, Misaki Ayuzawa resonated with her. It was at this convention that she met her best friend and fellow cosplayer, Sora Ichinose.

Cosplay allowed her to express all the things she loved, performing on stage, makeup, and arts and crafts. But what makes her different from other cosplayers? Jam’s cosplays are mostly male characters she greatly admires and she only recently ventured into cosplaying female characters which she notes are the most challenging cosplays she’s done. Bringing characters like Lenore from the anime adaptation of the video game Castlevania to life required her to master intricate hairstyles and details, but she embraced the challenge.

Beyond cosplay, Jam is a Marketing Management student, and she seamlessly connects her passion with her studies.“My passion for cosplay connects naturally with what I’m studying.” she shares. As a marketing student, her cosplays are about creativity, branding, and engagement. Whether it’s promoting her prints, growing her social media presence, or collaborating with events, “I’m applying marketing skills without even realizing it.”

Of course, the journey hasn’t always been smooth. With intricate costumes come inevitable malfunctions. She shares her experience with her Yelan cosplay, where a wrong-sized costume and a broken heel mid-photoshoot turned the day into a chaotic mess. But through it all, her friends were there to lend a hand and share a laugh, turning a mishap into a cherished memory.

Today, Jam finds herself on the other side of the table, judging the same cosplay competitions she once participated in. As a judge, she states that there are many misconceptions about cosplay, but she stays true to her belief that the simplest but most accurate cosplays can win over the more over-the-top but inaccurate ones.

Her message for students pursuing unique passions is a reminder to keep pushing forward, “Your creativity is a gift, and if it brings you joy, it’s worth nurturing.”  She encourages others to keep learning, stay consistent, and surround themselves with people who inspire and support them. With dedication and passion, the possibilities are limitless.
