USLS Breaks Ground for Granada Chapel, Honors Gretchen Oppen-Cojuangco

The University of St. La Salle marked a significant milestone in the ongoing development of its Granada Campus with the groundbreaking ceremony for the much-anticipated Granada Chapel, held on Friday, April 25.

The upcoming new chapel, a generous gift from Mrs. Soledad “Gretchen” Oppen-Cojuangco, underscores the University’s deep commitment to providing a dedicated space for prayer, reflection, and inspiration for the Lasallian community.

The event brought together key figures, including USLS President Br. Joaquin Severino Martinez FSC, members of the USLS Board of Trustees, University administrators, the De La Salle Brothers Community of Bacolod, and other distinguished guests, including benefactors.

“This chapel, which will soon rise at the heart of the Granada Campus, stands as a visible sign of God’s gracious hand at work in our University life and mission,” Br. Martinez said.

The Brother President also emphasized the generosity of Mrs. Cojuangco, whose deep faith and quiet support made this long-held dream a reality.

“This moment also honors a long-standing friendship between the University and the Cojuangco family—a bond marked by shared values, quiet generosity, and unwavering support for our Lasallian mission,” he added.

In a heartfelt moment, Ms. Claudia Diaz Cojuangco, granddaughter of Mrs. Gretchen Oppen-Cojuangco, delivered a response on behalf of the family, expressing their pride and joy in supporting the University’s mission.

“As a granddaughter and as a Lasallian, it brings me so much joy to know that this chapel will not only be a place for solace and prayer—something my grandmother always reminded me of—but also a commemoration of her selfless contribution to the Lasallian community,” she said.

The construction of the new chapel is not only a physical structure but also a profound symbol of USLS’s commitment to nurturing the Lasallian values of faith, community, and service, as the University expands its presence in Granada.

The Granada Campus continues to play a vital role in extending the University’s reach, offering quality Christian education to Bacolod City and beyond.
