Center for Marketing and Communications 16 Apr, 2026

The University’s Political Science Department successfully conducted its 1st Research Colloquium on April 16 at the Santuario de La Salle. The event gathered student researchers, faculty members, and partners from local government to present and discuss research related to governance and public service.

The colloquium carried the theme, “Bridging Research and Practice: Advancing Local Governance through Data-Driven Findings,” and was made possible through the efforts of the Political Science Society with the participation of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Bacolod City and Negros Occidental. It highlighted the importance of using research to better understand and improve local governance.

The program began with opening remarks from College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Rowela Chiu, followed by Dr. Virgilio Aguilar, Research Professor of the Political Science Program, who explained the purpose of the activity and emphasized the value of research in addressing real issues in communities. Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Ricver Ureta and Dr. Elias Patriarca also expressed support for the initiative, highlighting the importance of continuing research activities that connect classroom learning with real community needs.

Five student research studies were presented during the colloquium. These included:

  • Assessment of Barangay GAD Plans Towards a Gender Responsive Governance in a Highly Urbanized City
  • The Performance of Political Dynastic Families on Good Local Governance in a Congressional District
  • Seal of Good Local Governance for Barangays: Best Practices Among Barangay Awardees in Negros Occidental
  • The Availment and Satisfaction of Internally-Displaced Persons Due to Kanlaon Volcano Eruption on the Disaster Response of LGU’s in Negros Occidental
  • Compliance with SGLGB and Challenges Encountered by Barangays of a 4th Class Municipality.

Representatives from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) shared their insights and feedback, helping clarify the studies and highlighting their relevance to local governance practice and delivery.

The event also strengthened USLS’ ongoing partnership with the DILG, which includes internship opportunities for students in local government offices across Bacolod City. These experiences allow students to better understand how governance works in practice.

The inaugural Research Colloquium stands as a pioneering milestone for the University, reflecting its strong support for student research that is grounded in real community needs and meaningfully connected to advancing local development and good governance.
