The presence of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Philippine economy cannot be underestimated as they collectively account for at least 99.5% of the total registered businesses in the country as of 2019. Micro enterprises account constitute 89% of these establishments. As to employment, 62.4% of the country’s labor force are provided by MSMEs while large enterprise account for 37.6% with micro enterprises providing the largest employment at 29.8% of total labor force. Most of the family businesses are classified as micro entities and the pandemic hit these sector the most. With this, it is imperative to revisit how these important player in the economy navigated through the pandemic.
